Just a reminder to all members and public that the minimum weight for weighing marlin is 90kg.
To help protect our fishery and ensure healthy future stocks, we strongly encourage tagging and releasing smaller marlin that are unlikely to meet the minimum weight. These fish are prime breeders and releasing them gives them the best chance to grow, spawn, and be caught again another day.
Gauging Marlin Weight (Quick Guide)
A good rule of thumb:
A marlin needs to be approximately 2.4 metres measured from the tip of the lower jaw to the fork of the tail to be around the 90kg mark.
Also remember to factor in the condition of the fish. A lean or post-spawn fish may weigh significantly less than a fat, well-conditioned fish of the same length.
Handy Ways to Measure on the Water
- Put a small 2.4m mark on the side of your boat
- Carry a 2.4m length of leader or rope with a clip swivel on one end that can be slid down your leader
- Use fish scale / length rulers, which are readily available for purchase
Making smart decisions on the water helps the fish, the club, and the future of marlin fishing.
